Koan |ˈkōän| nouna paradoxical anecdote or riddle, used in Zen Buddhism to demonstrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and to provoke enlightenment.

ORIGIN Japanese, literally ‘matter for public thought,’ from Chinese gōngàn ‘official business.’
